Would you take a probabilistic audit opinion?

The headlines have been arriving with increasing regularity. AI systems that analyze company results and stock valuations with, their developers claim, accuracy that outperforms human analysts. Models that read earnings announcements, process financial statements, cross-reference regulatory filings, and produce investment recommendations in minutes. Hedge funds retiring research teams. Asset managers embedding AI-generated assessments within portfolio decisions as routine.
For most readers, these are interesting technology stories. For anyone who has spent a career in audit and assurance, they should register as something more pointed: a direct challenge to the foundational premise of what we do.
The audit profession exists to serve the public interest. Investors, creditors, employees, regulators and the broader market that depends on reliable financial information to function. That mandate is what gives the audit opinion its authority.
A framework built for a different era
Auditing standards were designed for a world of human-authorized, traceable decision-making, where financial information flows from human judgments through documented processes to recorded amounts a trained professional can inspect and verify.
To call what is happening now a disruption is already an oversimplification. We are entering the era of agentic AI, where software does not wait for human instruction but autonomously plans, decides and executes consequential actions end to end. The companies building these systems are attracting valuations in the tens of millions because the market has made a clear judgment: agentic technology will likely replace, not merely augment, significant portions of finance. Accounts payable running itself. Financial close processes that once required teams now run overnight.
Fair value estimates, expected credit loss calculations, going concern assessments will be increasingly produced, not by a finance director's judgment, but by models whose reasoning may be difficult to reconstruct or explain. Increasingly, the financial information certified by auditors is being generated by systems that operate below the threshold of human authorization on which our entire evidence framework depends.
That is not a minor inconvenience. It is a foundational mismatch between the assurance framework and the reality it is meant to address.
What is emerging, in effect, is a new governance problem: how to provide credible, independent oversight of financial activities that are increasingly executed autonomously by software rather than authorized directly by people.
The question the standards do not yet answer
Audit technology has advanced. Auditors can now process entire transaction populations, detect anomalies across millions of entries, and deploy sophisticated sampling models unimaginable a decade ago.
The problem is the standards have not kept pace. More urgently, neither has anyone adequately addressed what happens when the entity being audited is itself running AI systems.
When a company uses an AI model to assist in a material estimate, that model functions as what can be considered as a "management's expert." That requirement was written with human experts in mind. It does not address model drift, the degradation of accuracy as real-world conditions diverge from historical patterns. It does not explain what professional skepticism looks like when reasoning is encoded in parameters no human explicitly designed.
And then there is the question the profession has barely started asking. In an agentic workflow, entries are posted, approvals executed and financial records updated by software acting on its own initiative. There is no human sign-off to inspect. The audit trail assumed by every evidence standard may not exist in any form current standards were designed to interrogate. Auditors need purpose-built capability to monitor and evaluate autonomous financial activity, and the tools most audit teams rely on were not designed for an entity that is partly running itself.
In an environment where financial processes can operate continuously and autonomously, oversight must also evolve to become continuous, independent of the systems executing the activity, and capable of explaining clearly how risks are identified.
These are not edge cases. This is the emerging mainstream of financial reporting in an AI-centric world.
The investor side has already moved on
The same AI systems making headlines are being deployed by institutional investors to assess financial information continuously and independently of the audit cycle. The audit opinion, when it arrives, is one input among many, and often not the most timely one.
That asymmetry raises a direct question. If the most sophisticated users of financial information have already formed their own AI-powered view before the auditor's opinion lands, is the binary pass or fail verdict still fit for purpose?
Put simply, when thousands of AI investment systems are trained on the same data and reach the same conclusion at the same time, markets move together. Fast. The audit profession has no adequate framework for what happens next.
Would you take a probabilistic opinion?
Which brings us back to the question in the title. The profession needs to engage seriously with whether the binary audit opinion remains the right product for the public interest it is meant to serve.
A clean or qualified opinion made sense when financial information was the product of human judgment within well-understood parameters. But when a significant portion of financial statements are shaped by probabilistic models, the binary verdict obscures more than it reveals. Should auditors express views on the uncertainty ranges attached to AI-supported estimates as key or critical audit matters? Should the opinion reflect confidence factors rather than a single pass or fail? And should financial reporting frameworks require companies to disclose where AI models have driven material judgments, so that auditors and investors alike know where the probabilities lie?
These are uncomfortable questions. They are also urgent ones. The world producing the numbers we audit already thinks in probability ranges. The question is whether the profession is willing to meet it there, in the public interest, before someone else defines what that looks like.
What that opinion would actually look like is a conversation the profession has not yet had. Perhaps it is time to start.
The window to lead that conversation is open. It will not stay open indefinitely.
