A CA's viral X post about a man receiving a tax notice after filing his ITR using AI has reignited the debate over relying on AI for financial and tax-related tasks
A chartered accountant’s viral post on X has sparked a fresh discussion about the growing use of artificial intelligence for financial tasks after claiming that a man who filed his Income Tax Return (ITR) with the help of AI later received a tax notice.
The viral post was shared by X user @carajendra89, who appears to be a chartered accountant. Sharing what he suggested was a real client interaction, he wrote, “Results of filing ITR with AI are start coming😀"
The post also included a screenshot of a conversation in which an individual sought professional assistance after receiving an Income Tax notice. The message read:
“Hello sir, I wanted to connect with a tax expert.
Kindly let us know your concern, and we’ll be happy to assist you.
Its regarding ITR notice. I filed my ITR using AI, and now I have received a tax notice.
Can you please connect with an expert who can help me understand and resolve it."
While the authenticity of the exchange could not be independently verified, the post quickly gained traction, with social media users offering sharply differing views on the role of AI in tax filing.
One user cautioned against relying entirely on artificial intelligence for important financial matters, writing, “One should know what AI should be used for and what it should not be used for. Especially if it related to critical things like ITR filing."
Another questioned the need for professional assistance altogether, commenting, “I don’t understand why CA is needed to file a simple thing as ITR? anybody earning 15+lacs is wise enough to use his brain and do the job by himself."
Some users remained optimistic about AI’s future capabilities. One wrote, “Don’t worry stll believe Sooner or later AI will replace CA work easily."
Others argued that the issue may not be AI itself but how it is being used. One user shared a contrasting experience, saying, “CA is only required only if we business income… For normal individual ITR 1 and ITR2 we can file without any error using AI … I have filed 3 ITRs in my family using claude and all processed and also learnt so many things in the process."
Another user urged tax professionals to highlight such incidents as a learning opportunity, writing, “I urge every tax professional to showcase these chats on filer in the interest of masses. Still many Genz specially IT professional think if they can handle tech they can do everything. At least many will not stuck with IT notices next year."
Meanwhile, another commenter suggested using AI to fix the issue as well, remarking, “Use the same AI and make the corrections and resubmit. These ITR filing jobs should be handled by AI easily."
